2012-11-1 Highlights Tantalite ore was digested using molten ammonium bifluoride. Niobium and tantalum were extracted using octanol as extractant. Addition of H 2 SO 4 improves the separation of niobium and tantalum. Extraction with 2-octanol is almost similar to extraction with 1-octanol. Two and three stages were sufficient for the extraction of Ta and Nb respectively.

About tantalum - TIC
Tantalite on the international market generally contains a minimum of 30% Ta 2 O 5, ... (MIBK) or liquid ion exchange using an amine extractant in kerosene, produces highly purified solutions of tantalum and niobium. Generally, the tantalum values in solution are converted into potassium tantalum fluoride (K 2 TaF 7) or tantalum oxide (Ta 2 O 5).

Niobium and tantalum - USGS
Niobium and tantalum are transition metals that are almost always found together in nature because they have very similar physical and chemical properties. Their properties of hardness, conductivity, and resistance to corrosion largely determine their primary uses today. The leading use of niobium (about 75 percent) is in the production of high-strength steel alloys used in
